There is no functional difference. "Paint coated magnet wire" and "enameled wire" are terms used interchangeably. They refer to a metal conductor (copper or aluminum) insulated with a thin, cured polymer film coating (or enamel varnish) rather than extruded plastic jackets.

Enameled aluminum wire is chosen when minimizing weight is a primary design goal or to reduce raw material costs. Aluminum is roughly 30% the weight of copper. It is commonly used in microwave oven transformers, domestic appliances, automotive alternators, and generator coils.

CTC is constructed by arranging multiple individual enameled flat wires into a transposed bundle. Transposition reduces eddy current losses caused by magnetic flux leakage in high-power transformers. It also improves mechanical strength and makes winding large coils easier.

The thermal class indicates the maximum temperature (in Celsius) that the insulation can withstand during continuous operation (for a service life rating of 20,000 hours). Class 180 (H) is standard for generic industrial motors, whereas Class 200 and 220 are used in high-power alternators, traction motors, and aerospace electronics.

CCA wire consists of an aluminum core clad within a high-purity copper outer sleeve. At high frequencies, electrical currents flow primarily along the outer surface of a conductor (known as the skin effect). Enameled CCA wire provides low electrical resistance at high frequencies while remaining lighter and more cost-effective than solid copper wire.
