What are the primary performance trade-offs between Enameled Aluminum Wire and Enameled Copper Wire?
Enameled aluminum wire is approximately one-third the weight of copper wire, which reduces motor and coil weight while lowering raw material costs. However, aluminum has lower electrical conductivity (about 61% of IACS). As a result, components wound with aluminum wire require a larger cross-section to carry the same current as copper, meaning a slightly larger winding volume is needed.
How does Copper-Clad Aluminum (CCA) wire compare to pure copper or pure aluminum?
CCA wire consists of an aluminum core clad within a high-purity copper sheath. It combines the lightweight properties of aluminum with the surface conductivity and solderability of copper. CCA is highly effective for high-frequency applications where the skin effect causes current to flow primarily along the outer copper layer, saving both weight and cost.
What is a Continuously Transposed Conductor (CTC), and why is it used?
CTC consists of a group of individual enameled rectangular wires arranged to form a composite conductor. The individual strands are continuously transposed relative to each other. This configuration reduces eddy current losses in winding assemblies, making it ideal for high-capacity, high-efficiency power distribution transformers.
